Two cases of measles have been reported in Seattle, Kirkland, and Bellevue after residents were likely exposed to it while traveling internationally together.

Before the two residents were diagnosed with measles, they visited multiple locations in Seattle, Kirkland, and Bellevue while infectious. You can see the specific locations they were at by clicking here.

Measles is extremely contagious. Someone who is sick can be contagious before the telltale rash appears, and people know they are sick. The virus can remain in the air for up to two hours after a contagious person leaves the area.

It can cause serious health complications, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), especially in children younger than five. The most common issues are ear infections and diarrhea. But some serious cases can lead to pneumonia and encephalitis, which is inflammation of the brain.

According to the health department, measles symptoms begin seven to 21 days after exposure. Measles is contagious from about four days before the rash appears through four days after the rash appears.

The vaccination status of the pair is unknown, according to Public Health – Seattle & King County.

First case of measles in King County among residents

Public Health – Seattle & King County stated that they are the first two measles cases reported among residents in 2026. Previous measles cases in King County this year have involved people who traveled through King County while contagious with measles.

There have been 29 cases of measles in Washington residents so far in 2026, including an outbreak in Snohomish County.

According to Public Health – Seattle & King County, two doses of the MMR vaccine are 97% effective at preventing measles.
