An alien landing craft spotted at U.S. Capitol

As we all know, 2016 is already underway. The candidates are out there exuding so much down-home authenticity, they’re more like us than we are.

Except for one thing. They live in a universe where every workday they must spend at least four hours on the phone raising money. Which really bothered Doug Hughes, the 61-year-old mailman from Ruskin, Fla. who managed to land his a one-man gyrocopter on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday.

“I’m going to have 535 letters strapped to the landing gear and those letters are going to be addressed to every member of Congress,” Hughes said.

His letter was actually quite reasonable.

“Campaign finance reform is the cornerstone of building an honest Congress” he wrote, “and no individual should be allowed to spend hundreds of millions to ‘influence’ an election.”

He had one simple demand.

“To build a wall of separation between the government and big money so that government will represent the people.”

To insure he wouldn’t be misunderstood, he had a reporter for the Tampa Bay News make a video and he even alerted the Secret Service.

“I have carefully planned it so that nobody will get hurt, including me, especially me,” Hughes said.

But, it became a national security story. As in, ‘Oh my gosh, if a mailman from Florida could do that, the terrorists will be next.’

Now, had he been Jeff Bezos in an Amazon drone delivering a fat contribution, Congress might have listened.

Instead, Hughes might as well have been a visitor from another planet. Although, considering the alternate universe where he touched down, it’s not a bad metaphor.
