Ross: Bill in Arizona sets a dangerous new standard for our democracy

Now that the head of the Capitol police wants to make the security fence around the U.S. Capitol permanent, let history record that a presidency that began with a wall to keep out foreigners ended with a fence to keep out Americans.

But what else can you do? The rebels built gallows! They chanted “Hang Mike Pence” because he obeyed the law and wouldn’t throw out electoral votes! Which brings me to a new bill in the Arizona Legislature. I’ll just read it:

The Legislature … at any time before the presidential inauguration may revoke the secretary of state’s … issuance … of a presidential elector’s certificate of election.

So if this passes, Arizona legislators could legally do what Mike Pence could not: change the electors’ votes.

And they could do it right up until noon on January 20!

I don’t know if this came to pass, but I just hope any legislator considering this think it through. I know some of them are angry, but this would mean that state lawmakers would be legally allowed to do what Mike Pence could not.

And if he got death threats and a noose even though he was powerless to change anything, imagine what’ll happen in a world where legislators do have that power and decide not to use it.

We would need so much fencing.
