Well, actually the headline I meant to write was “Banks Want Deregulation” but the auto-correct changed it.
I know the US is known for its amnesia gene, but we need at least to remember this nugget of our history: that the banking industry in this country, in the thrall of bi-partisan de-regulation, deliberately set up a system focused on making profit by DISCOURAGING thrift, and encouraging WANTON BORROWING.
They claimed to be capitalists, but proved in fact to be traitors to capitalism by fulfilling Lenin’s most famous quote:
“A capitalist will sell you the rope you will hang him with, if he can make profit on it.”
Thanks guys! You’ve got guts — achieving what our enemies could barely fantasize, and now whining about the new regulations demanded by people like Senate Candidate Elizabeth Warren.
Interesting story — she once defended the industry until she found out it had been taken over by the body snatchers.
From the current Vanity Fair article:
She spoke of “the Wild West†conditions deregulation had created, where banks could sell virtually any product they wanted, on any terms: mortgages they knew consumers could not pay off, credit cards whose rates they could raise at whim, products that came with a mind-boggling array of penalty fees, many of them not fully disclosed. But it was her final remarks that brought down the standing-room-only house in June. “We cannot run our country without a strong middle class. We cannot run a democracy without a strong middle class,†she said, her voice quavering slightly. “If we hollow out the middle class,†she said, “then the country we know is gone.â€
When the banking industry abandoned the thrift ethic in favor of their toxic (but profitable) financial meth labs, they lost their right to control their own future. I’ll listen to them again only after the Haz-Mat team has hosed the toxins away.
