Listen to Dave’s Commentary: Barack Obama, Prometheus bound
The State of the Union address wasn’t about tax fairness. This was a speech about a president who knows what to do, but isn’t being allowed to do it.
In fact, it’s significant that the biggest sound bite today isn’t even from the speech:
“Good job tonight. Good job tonight.”
It’s an offhand remark picked up as he moved toward the podium. He tells Defense Secretary Panetta “Leo, good job tonight” because what he knows and we don’t is that two hours earlier, Seal Team Six… the outfit with the bin Laden notch on their belts, had rescued American Jessica Buchanan and a Danish co-worker from a pirate camp in Somalia where they’d been held since October. All nine pirates — dead.

And last night, he was telling friend and foe alike, “open your eyes! You say I’m not much of a leader, but in the one area where I can act without Congress’ permission, the military, I worked with George Bush’s Defense secretary and the woman who wanted my job to kill our biggest enemy, Osama bin Laden:
“All that mattered that day was the mission.”
And as for the Navy Seals:
“Every member of that unit trusted each other.”
Get it?
He wasn’t going to wait around for the free market to capture bin Laden. He was determined to act, and he didn’t care about the politics of the people who helped him.
And he isn’t just going to wait for the free market to create jobs, or simply pray that the health care industry controls costs, or cross his fingers that Wall Street will sober up.
And he’s betting that voters will think, you know when this guy actually DOES get his way things get done. After all, how many terrorists and pirates has Congress eliminated?
