Is student debt the Green Party’s ticket to the White House?

CNN held a Town Hall for the Green Party ticket — Jill Stein and Ajamu Baraka. And what Stein said about student debt could send her to the White House.

Stein, who is the party’s nominee, is a physician who has crusaded against the threats to health posed by pollution. Baraka, the vice presidential running mate, is a human rights activist who says police have acted as occupiers, and who once called Barack Obama an Uncle Tom for providing cover for the ruling class.

And this was the big question from the audience.

“Dr. Stein, given the way our political system works, effectively you could help Donald Trump like Ralph Nader helped George Bush in 2000. How can you sleep at night?”

“I will have trouble sleeping at night if Donald Trump is elected,” she responded. “I will also have trouble sleeping at night if Hillary Clinton is elected.”

She calls Donald Trump a xenophobic racist loudmouth but says Hillary Clinton has supported wars that kill black and brown people.

So, the only way Dr. Stein is going to get any sleep is to sleep in the White House.
Leading to the next logical question: how do you win when you’re polling at 3 percent?

“There are 43 million young people — and not so young people — who are trapped in predatory student loan debt. That is a winning plurality of the vote,” Stein explained.

She would essentially whisper in the ear of the Federal Reserve.

“I’m suggesting the Federal Reserve actually buy that debt, like it did for Wall Street, and it basically declared that debt null and void,” Stein said.

Students would wake up one morning to find their loan balance at zero. Pretty appealing thought. Except for the people who took second and third jobs to pay off their loans — they’ll feel like suckers.

But she’s right, 43 million grateful debtors could win a three-way race. Your move, students!
