Donald Trump proves the joke is on supporters during SNL skit

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump guarantees that his big campaign promise will never come true.

On Saturday, Donald Trump parodied himself in the Oval Office on “Saturday Night Live,” halfway into his first term, getting glowing reports from his cabinet.

“Just like I promised, right,” he said.

And then he’s interrupted by a visit from the President of Mexico, Enrique Pena.

“I brought you the check for the wall,” the parodied Pena says.

“That’s so wonderful … this is far too much money,” Donald, playing himself, says.

“No, I insist,” Pena says. “Consider it an apology for doubting you. As history shows us, nothing brings two countries together like a wall.”

And that’s the joke that surprised me. It didn’t surprise me that the writers would put it in; what surprised me is that Trump would allow it. Supposedly, he’s serious about the wall; it’s not a joke. And getting Mexico to pay for it is also not a joke.

But after that sketch, showing an apologetic Mexican president sucking up to the real Donald Trump? There’s no way Mexican President Enrique Pena is going to have anything to do with a wall.

Trump, being a savvy negotiator, must know that, leading us to conclude the only reason he let that scene stay is that he doesn’t really expect the wall to happen either.

Meaning the joke is on supporters who actually believed him.
