Finally, a foolproof transit solution for lower Queen Anne

Coming for one day in August, a giant Slip ‘n Slide will enable pedestrians to slide 1,000 feet down Mercer Street starting at Warren Avenue North, which is right by the Bagley Wright Theatre, and blow through all the traffic lights all the way down to the Opera House.

You will then dismount all soaking wet.

You’ll need an inflatable tube to use it, and a bathing suit would also be a good idea. You’ll need to sign up online.

Also be advised that it’s a one-way slide eastbound, so if you need to go westbound on Mercer, you’re out of luck &#8212 kind of like it is on a normal day.

Mercer Street will be closed for slide-setup on August 16th starting at 4 a.m. and until 11:30 p.m. The slide itself will run from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m.

“I can’t think of a worse street to put this Slip-n-Slide on than Mercer Street,” said co-host Colleen.

What you mean to say is you can’t think of a better street to put the Slip-n-Slide on than Mercer Street because it’s right in the center of the action and everybody’s going to have a great time.

Is there a better street?

“Any street would be better,” said KIRO Radio traffic reporter Chris Sullivan.

Why do they shut down the center lanes of I-90 during every race in the world? Because it’s fun to run on a street that usually only cars are on.

“You can walk on Mercer Street through the traffic now because it doesn’t move anyway,” Chris pointed out.

The good news is that August 16th is a Sunday, which might mean less traffic. Or not. Also that Sunday, the Seattle Center is hosting the Seattle Tattoo Convention and the third day of Hempfest kicks off at 10 a.m. at Myrtle Edwards Park.
