How to rescue a drowning phone call

I’m not surprised that people prefer tweets and texts over phone calls, because as phones get smarter, phone calls are to the point where everyone you talk to sounds like an overseas war correspondent.

In part because we tend to call from noisy locations.

But today, a start-up company called Cypher publicly launches a new anti-noise technology designed to fix this.

When a conversation is being drowned out by an ocean of noise, you have two approaches: The approach used by most noise canceling devices is to attack the noise, which is a little like trying to drain the ocean.

Cypher’s approach is to throw a life ring to the conversation and pull it out from the noise.

The example recorded in a crowded coffee shop, is
run through the voice rescue software and it sounds a little robotic but the background noise is gone.

How about something more challenging like a war zone?
After the processing you wouldn’t know where the person on the other end of the phone was.

Cypher says it’s voice rescue system doesn’t require special chips – it’s software that can be loaded onto any smartphone.
