Trump’s immigration comment was shockingly candid

Every presidential rally ends with the album version of The Rolling Stones’ “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.” I thought it would be the perfect background music for a comment the president made as he signed the most unusual executive order I can remember – an order that imposes limits on his own immigration policy.

“The dilemma is that if you’re weak, if you’re really, really pathetically weak, the country is going to be overrun with millions of people. And if you’re strong, then you don’t have any heart.”

That is shockingly candid.

President Trump is saying it is a weakness to be moved by the stories of children crying for their parents. He’s saying if you want to stop the rapists and the killers from crossing the border, you have to accept the collateral damage to the people who crossed the border to escape the rapists and killers.

President Trump had no problem seeing government officers pulling children away from parents who had come here to protect them until conservatives began breaking ranks. This is, after all, one of the scenarios that Second Amendment types warn us about.

However, by signing this new order, he shows that he’s tough enough to do what needs to be done but compassionate enough to stop himself from doing it — once he’s lost control of the news coverage.

The more I read the post-election analysis, the more I’m convinced voters weren’t just voting for a change – they were voting for a hormone.
