The four most frightening words to anyone with
something to hide: “Mike Wallace Is Here.” Well, 20
years ago, I showed up at HIS door, to interview HIM and I
was sweating it because it was live, it had to be no
longer than ten minutes, and it was Mike Wallace.

But I was ready:

Dave Ross: Are you intimidated by anybody?

Mike Wallace: I don’t know that intimidated is the
word. I stand in awe of certain individual’s whose
accomplishments are remarkable.

Of course Mike Wallace was best known for cornering bad
guys — but he said there WAS always one way they could
defend themselves:

Mike Wallace: Candor. The best thing when you are faced
with some of your own malfeasance or misfeasance it seems
to me.

Dave Ross: Is just to say, you caught me Mike, I’m
guilty.

Mike Wallace: And now let me tell you how it happened
and why it happened and put on it the best face that you
can.

By the way — he could NOT have been friendlier. Of
course he hadn’t seen my file yet.
