Recent school threat backs up NRA’s position, until it doesn’t

The NRA has argued if you take guns away, people will just find other weapons. That may be true, to some extent, Dave Ross says. (File, Associated Press)

In upper Darby, Pennsylvania, police announced the arrest of an 18-year-old exchange student from Taiwan for making a terroristic threat.

“He told a fellow student, don’t come to school on May 1 because I’m going to shoot up the school.”

The local police superintendent walked to a table covered with brown paper to show reporters what they found in his bedroom: a military-style ballistic vest, 20 rounds of 9mm ammunition; but no gun.

Instead of a gun, the student had a high-powered crossbow with a scope, light, and seven arrows.

Seems crazy. But in 2015 in Barcelona, a 13-year-old killed a teacher with a crossbow he’d made from pens. So you can imagine what this thing could’ve done.

The suspect’s attorney says the kid thought he was just being funny when he said he would attack the school. There’s no question that comedy is hard, especially when you’re not working in your native language.

But we’ve learned something here. It’s not always about guns.

It backs up the NRA position that if you confiscate every gun in America, stuff would still happen.

Of course, after the first shot with a crossbow, just about anybody in the room can give him a swift kick the moment he tries to reload. So there’s that.
