Questions for Hillary Clinton … without answers

I was watching one of Hillary Clinton’s New Hampshire round tables, where she rolls up in the Scooby Doo van to talk to ordinary folks.

Clinton was at a New Hampshire Furniture factory when she got a question from an older employee.

“I’m in my late 50’s right now,” the man told Clinton. “I have very little saved for retirement because the company that I left before I came here, closed their doors.”

His last employer went out of business and he’s clearly worried he will outlive what little savings he has. A pretty common fear, by the way. Clinton responded by telling him that he’s a good American.

“American workers work longer and harder than the vast majority of workers anywhere in the world,” she said.

But of course, the company president is sitting right there, so she also explained there may be good reasons why a business can’t provide great retirement benefits.

“Some people are trying to just keep the doors open and stay afloat,” Clinton said.

But she can’t really help this man &#8212 even as president &#8212 and she knows it.

“Let’s just kind of take a deep breath here as a country and say, ‘OK, we are going to have a retirement issue. And people who have worked hard deserve to have enough security when they retire, so that they can have a good quality of life.’ I am 100 percent committed to that.”

It came off as a roundabout way of saying, “Sir, I wish you luck.”

Remember this is a country which just barely guaranteed the right to health care. Which come to think of it, is why she wants us all to take a deep breath before fixing the retirement problem. We’ll be holding it for a long time.
