Ross: Biden should have us reevaluating ground rules for affection

The evidence is mounting that Joe Biden is a space invader. Who not only gets into your space, but can pull you into his. The question is – should this be disqualifying for a politician?

So far, no one is accusing him of assault, but he does seem to be guilty of what I would call “corporeal trespassing.”

It’s the kind of touching more appropriate among family members as opposed to strangers. And Joe is hardly unique in this.

I grew up among Italians and I can tell you – there was a lot of hugging, kissing, shoulder-grabbing, head rubbing, face-pinching. Oh, the face pinching!

All perfectly innocent; more like #TooNice than #MeToo.

But it does get annoying. Remember the shoulder rub era when co-workers would give you unrequested shoulder rubs? Well-intended, but maybe I like my tight muscles.

So we need to agree on new ground rules, especially for hugs.

I realize people do it out of genuine affection, but considerate huggers will at least warn you.

They’ll give you a sideways smile and open their arms really wide as a signal.

“Get ready, I’m coming in for the hug!” that signal will tell you, giving you ample time to flee.

Joe should at least warn people! Give the hug signal, or just be up front and say “Hey I really need to sniff your hair. And then whisper into your ear. About my respect for women.”
