Listen to Dave Ross Commentary: Saving Cuba!
If you want votes In Florida, you have to be tough on Cuba, so at last night’s Republican debate — the question was what would you do if Fidel Castro died?
And it started a Romney-Gingrich tough-off:
“First of all, you thank heavens if Fidel Castro has returned to his maker,” said Romney.
To his maker? No way says Gingrich:
“I don’t think that Fidel’s going to meet his maker. I think he’s going to the other place.”
As for what the US should do should Castro die, Romney would be aggressive:
“You work very aggressively with the new leadership in Cuba to try and move them toward a more open degree than they’ve had in the past.
But Gingrich would be VERY aggressive:
“A very aggressive policy of reaching out to every single Cuban that would like to be free, helping network them together, because a Gingrich presidency will not tolerate four more years of this dictatorship.”
Because we cannot tolerate communist Cuba. At least until they learn to make iPhones.
But what else can we possibly try? We tried the exploding cigar, poison, a scuba diving suit infected with fungus, an embargo, a law that says no American can go to Cuba but any Cuban can float his way to Florida — and the result is we gave Castro such a good excuse for his country’s decrepit economy that he’ll probably die peacefully in his sleep with a smirk on his face.
Does anyone running for President get that?
“I was drafted in 1962 at the heighth of the Cold War when the missiles were in Cuba, and the Cold War is over,” said Ron Paul.
One candidate seems to.
