I’m a sucker for military technology stories, and this one is impressive.
Two U.S. Army soldiers were on patrol in an AH-64 Apache helicopter when it was shot down over the Strait of Hormuz — crashing around 3:30 a.m. local time off the coast of Oman. President Donald Trump blamed Iran on Tuesday for shooting down the U.S. Army helicopter and said the U.S. must respond.
Picture it: The middle of the night, foreign waters, and a helicopter going down. You survive the impact — thank God — and now you’re treading water in the dark, somewhere in the Gulf of Oman, praying that whoever finds you first is a friendly face. The Strait of Hormuz is the same waterway Iran has effectively closed during its ongoing war with the U.S. and Israel. This is not a casual swim.
And then help arrives. About two hours after the crash, an unmanned vessel pulls up alongside them, a 24-foot boat called a Corsair. But there is no friendly face greeting you. No face at all, in fact. This is a drone boat.

It was built by a company called Saronic Technologies, and this was the first known drone rescue at sea in U.S. military history.
I went to the Saronic website after hearing this. The Corsair looks like a standard small boat, except there’s nobody home. Just autonomous capability, a 35-knot top speed, and apparently all the room needed for two downed Army pilots to climb aboard. The Corsair is assigned to the Navy’s Task Force 59, established in 2021 as the Navy’s first uncrewed and AI-focused unit operating in the Middle East.
Both soldiers were rescued in stable condition. A manned helicopter eventually airlifted them to safety.
Think about that full arc. An Apache goes down in contested waters at three in the morning. Two hours later, a robot boat fishes the pilots out of the Gulf of Oman. A drone — no sailor, no risk to additional lives — just showed up and did the job.

If you want to appreciate how far military engineering has come, spend an afternoon researching Hobart’s Funnies from World War II — the modified Sherman tank that used a massive spinning chain rotor to detonate hidden land mines before troops advanced. Saving lives through ingenious, purpose-built machines is not a new idea. But a 24-foot autonomous rescue vessel operating in one of the most dangerous waterways on earth? That’s something to appreciate.
The future of maritime operations is already here. It just doesn’t have a face.
