Harger: Boy living in tent off Aurora Avenue now receiving medical care, neighbors say

We have an update on the boy in the tent.

If you heard or saw my investigative piece last week, you know the story. A nine-year-old boy was living in a tent just blocks off Aurora Avenue in North Seattle with his parents. His mother was addicted to fentanyl and working on Aurora. His father refused every offer of help. The boy wasn’t enrolled in school. Had never been. Neighbors reported he was left alone for hours. Sometimes days.

Neighbors had called the Seattle Police Department. Called Child Protective Services. Watched outreach workers from The More We Love offer immediate shelter, only to be turned away. The story raised serious questions about Washington’s Keeping Families Together Act and whether the child welfare system can intervene when parents refuse services.

What we know now about the boy in the tent

The tent is now abandoned. Neighbors said the boy is getting medical care and support.

It sounds like it’s going to be a very long road. There’s a lot of healing that needs to happen. Not just for him. For that whole family.

This Christmas, maybe keep them in your thoughts. Say a prayer if that’s your thing. That the boy gets the childhood he deserves. That the mother finds her way out of addiction. That the father finds whatever he needs to finally say yes to help. That this story ends differently than it was heading.

How Seattle listeners and viewers responded to the Aurora tent story

Here’s the part I didn’t expect. After that story aired, I heard from so many of you. Emails. Texts. Calls. People who couldn’t stop thinking about that little boy.

Several listeners offered to open their homes to him. Some tried to find the tent to bring the family food and clothing. Complete strangers reaching out because they couldn’t just sit there and do nothing.

We so often hear about the bad news. And yes, that’s important. It’s my job to tell you what’s broken, what’s failing, who’s being failed. But there’s real good happening too. And you’re proof of that.
