‘Why are you being hyperbolic?’: Jake and Spike challenge Seattle Mayor Wilson reasoning for RV permit veto

Nov 3, 2026, 6:29 PM | Updated: 6:31 pm

Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson’s opposition to an RV permitting program drew criticism from KIRO hosts Jake Skorheim and Spike O’Neill, who questioned why she invoked traveling nurses while explaining her concerns about the legislation.

Jake and Spike argued that her emphasis on workers who use RVs distracted from the street conditions the Seattle City Council’s proposal was intended to address.

“Why are you being hyperbolic? Why are you throwing this out there? Because it undermines the entirety of her argument,” Spike said on “The Jake and Spike Show” on KIRO Newsradio.

Their discussion followed Wilson’s announcement that she would veto the permitting proposal, which she described as well-intended but poorly designed.

Wilson warns of bureaucracy and unintended consequences

Wilson acknowledged that some people rely on RVs as their only shelter in an expensive city. She also recognized that RVs can create problems for surrounding neighborhoods.

“Some people down on their luck in our high-cost city rely on RVs as their only form of shelter, and in some cases, RVs are causing real problems for residents and businesses, from garbage to noise to, in extreme cases, criminal activity,” Wilson said.

She credited the council for focusing on the issue but questioned whether its proposed permitting system would work.

“However, the program as proposed is poorly designed, creating a complicated new city bureaucracy that’s unlikely to be effective,” Wilson said.

That explanation prompted an immediate sarcastic response from Jake.

“Oh, and I’m sure she hates bureaucracy,” Jake responded.

Traveling nurses become the focus of the debate

Jake questioned whether traveling nurses were a persuasive reason to reject the proposal.

He recalled getting to know out-of-state traveling nurses during the births of his children at Swedish in Seattle. His skepticism was not about whether traveling nurses exist, but whether their circumstances belonged at the center of a debate about problematic RV encampments.

Spike responded with a sarcastic example of seeking healthcare at an RV encampment before distinguishing between people who travel in RVs and the street problems under discussion.

He acknowledged that some nurses use RVs to travel between jobs. He also noted that Wilson had cited military veterans traveling in RVs to receive care at VA facilities.

“While those two situations really do exist,” Spike said.

Nevertheless, he questioned using those examples to justify rejecting the permitting proposal, arguing that doing so weakened Wilson’s broader case.

Hosts argue the city should focus on street conditions

Jake characterized the issue as one involving drugs, crime, and trafficking rather than primarily accommodating traveling workers.

Spike also distinguished Wilson’s objection to the permitting component from her support for other measures. He noted that she had signed companion legislation involving safe lots and other assistance.

Jake and Spike’s criticism centered on Wilson’s explanation for rejecting permits, not a claim that she had opposed every part of the council’s response. Jake framed the dispute as a reminder that local elections directly shape city policy.

“This is why it’s important to get your ballots out and vote because you might avoid a Katie Wilson situation like Seattle finds themselves in,” Jake said.
