Is it Mitt Romney’s “Dukakis” moment? His campaign is in clean-up mode after a little spelling mistake in a big social media push.

The campaign released a new smartphone app letting you overlay a slogan over a picture of your choice. One problem…one of them says “A better Amercia.” You read that right. Someone misspelled America. And now they typo has gone viral.

Even if they’d gotten it right, Ross and Burbank co-host Luke Burbank wonders if it will become the digital equivalent of the much mocked imaged of failed presidential candidate Michael Dukakis atop a tank.

“Just the idea of saying a better America, all you do is snap a picture of a bunch of people in a bread line. And all of a sudden this becomes a satirical and sort of cutting criticism of Mitt Romney, and that’s if you spell it right,” Burbank says.

But Dave Ross says it’s barely a blip in the big picture.

“I’ve become actually numb to it now because there are so many little things like this that pop up. And frankly, the thing that made Dukakis and the tank so damning was that’s the way he looked without being photoshopped,” Ross says.

“Suppose they very cleverly misspelled America knowing it would be picked up as a meme and would give even added publicity to Mitt Romney campaign that’s how clever they are.”

The campaign has since pulled the app, but you can find images of it on about a million other websites and blogs. And if nothing else, the satirical versions are making for an amusing day of diversion.
