Dave is well aware of his age: He’s on the verge of becoming a senior citizen.
So he says he reads stories about scams that prey on the naivetés of the elderly with considerable interest. This week, a story of an elderly man on the Eastside who wire-transferred over $80,000 to a young man he thought was his grandson in trouble was quite concerning to the show host.
But the man wasn’t helping a beloved grandchild – it was a scam. 97.3 KIRO FM anchor Urusla Reutin experienced the scam firsthand last year, when her father received a call from someone pretending to be her nephew.
Fortunately, her family was skeptical. They found out her nephew wasn’t in jail in Mexico (as the caller had said,) and the phone calls were actually coming from Canada.
Since arresting the out-of-country scammers wasn’t possible, Reutin did the next best thing, she wrote a story warning others of the risks.
While Dave says that these scams make him nervous, he doesn’t think he’d give his children, let alone a grandchild, $80,000. “Are you kidding me? After all the money I’ve already spent!”
