45-Year Fire Chief Feels Betrayed by WA Income Tax Law
Chief Tim Manley has spent nearly 45 years in the fire service. He's not a millionaire. He's a firefighter and a practicing paramedic. And he says the state broke a promise to every first responder in Washington.
Manley joins John Curley to explain why he appeared in a campaign ad supporting Initiative 645 and why one sentence buried in the income tax bill changed everything for public employee retirees.
Before the law passed, Washington explicitly protected first responders' retirement benefits from state taxation. The new income tax law removed that protection. Supporters say it doesn't matter because firefighters will never earn $1 million. Manley says that's answering a question nobody asked.
