Connecticut's Warning to Washington: Don't Do This

In 1991, Tom Scott organized 65,000 people to descend on the Connecticut State Capitol in the largest rally in state history to stop the income tax. They killed it six times. It passed at 3 a.m. on a tie-breaking vote from the lieutenant governor — after 13 Republicans broke ranks and the governor who ran ads calling it "gasoline on the fires of recession" signed it into law anyway.

Now Scott joins John Curley from Connecticut with a message for Washington: everything he predicted has come true.

Before the income tax, Connecticut spent $7.9 billion. Today it spends $29 billion. The rate went up. The base expanded. The millionaires fled to Florida and Tennessee. And the money that left was backfilled by taxing the people who couldn't afford to leave.
