Tacoma's $10M Anti-Landlord Measure Explained

The Tacoma Democratic Socialists of America are back with a new ballot measure they're calling "Safe Homes for All." Kevin Schilling joins John Curley to explain what it would actually do — and why it's going to make the housing crisis worse, not better.

Under the proposed measure, one single tenant complaint is all it takes for the city to investigate, subpoena, and discover every property a landlord owns inside AND outside the city of Tacoma. Tenants and their attorneys could sue for up to five times monthly rent over a vaguely defined "violation." The estimated cost to run the program? Up to $10 million — in a city already $40 million in the red.
