Guards at the King County jail have been warned to keep a close eye out after someone stole a gun, uniform and duty belt from the car of an off-duty corrections officer.

The vehicle break-in happened May 29 in Seattle, says Capt. Troy Bacon with the Department of Adult and Juvenile Detention.

Officials have sent a confidential security bulletin to members of the department alerting them of the theft.

“There is no information that would lead us to believe the public should be more alarmed now than at any other time,” Bacon says. “The safety bulletin was published for the staff working the facility just to make sure they’re aware of the incident and to remain diligent in their duties.”

Bacon says jail staff always check identification of all those entering the facility in downtown Seattle, even if they’re in uniform.

Seattle police are investigating the theft.
