Amazon outage costs company nearly $5 million

Aug 19, 2013, 2:32 PM | Updated: 2:51 pm

It might not seem like a big deal, but when Amazon.com went down for about 40 minutes Monday, it stopped a significant flow of traffic and revenue from would-be shoppers, likely costing Amazon millions.

The company isn’t commenting, but it’s estimated Amazon lost approximately $120,000 per minute during the outage – about $4.8 million based on 40 minutes of lost sales, according to Taylor Soper at Geekwire.com. Soper based his estimate on Amazon’s $15.7 billion in revenue posted last quarter.

The outage comes just days after Google’s services went down Friday for several minutes, cutting off nearly 40 percent of Internet traffic worldwide.
