Officer Jonathan Shoop with the Bothell Police Department.

Bothell Police have identified an officer who was shot during a traffic stop Monday night as Jonathan Shoop.

The department says Shoop died at the scene from his wounds.

Shoop had been with the department for a little over a year. Before that, he served in the United States Coast Guard.

He is survived by his fiance, his mother, and two brothers.

“Jonathan was a dedicated officer who served the City of Bothell with professionalism and compassion. Jonathan was well liked amongst his peers and throughout the community. Officer Jonathan Shoop will be dearly missed.”

A Bothell police officer was shot and killed Monday night, following a chase that began when officers attempted to pull over a black sedan on SR 522.

The driver of the sedan refused to stop when ordered by police, hitting a pedestrian, and running into the center median. The suspect then exited their car, fired a gun at officers, and ran on foot away from the scene.

Two Bothell officers were shot in the incident, one fatally. The other officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Both the surviving officer and the pedestrian were taken to Harborview Medical Center, with the latter in satisfactory condition. The officer was treated and released from the hospital Tuesday morning.

Neither the suspect’s name nor the identities of the officers were immediately released.

After a lengthy search, the suspect was found hiding on a rooftop, and was taken into custody “without incident” shortly after 3 a.m. Tuesday.

“I’ve worked here over 25 years and we’ve never had an officer shot,” Bothell police Capt. Mike Johnson told KIRO 7. “So, this is some uncharted territory for us and it’s going to be a rough couple days for our organization.”

KIRO 7 reports the fallen officer’s body was removed from the scene just after 7 a.m. Officers lined the street as an ambulance carrying the body left for the Medical Examiner’s Office.

Investigators are on the scene, with the following roads closed:

  • NE Bothell Way (SR 522) between NE 180th and Kaysner Way
  • Bothell Way NE (SR 527) between Main St and NE Bothell Way

Gov. Jay Inslee issued a statement on the incident Tuesday morning.

Trudi [Inslee] and I join Washingtonians in mourning the loss of one of Bothell’s finest. While more information is still being gathered, it appears that the injuries to a second officer shot last night do not seem to be life-threatening. We are relieved to know a suspect has been apprehended and we will continue to follow this situation. I send the deepest condolences to the family and friends of this public servant who was killed while serving the community.

Bothell Councilmember Mason Thompson tweeted after the shooting:

Representative Davina Duerr also said she was heartbroken:

Many departments around Western Washington are reaching out to Bothell PD:
