The Seattle Department of Transportation and Seattle Police Department identified initial steps they will take to improve the city’s response to major traffic crashes.

The study follows the March 24 semi-truck crash on State Route 99 that blocked all southbound lanes north of Royal Brougham Way South for about nine hours.

The departments completed a report reviewing the crash, response identifying issues and recommending solutions.

“After reviewing the after-action report, I definitely believe there is room for systemic improvement,” said Seattle Police Chief Kathleen O’Toole. “We look forward to planning and training with our partner agencies to make sure we have the right tools and protocols in place in the future.”

The departments will develop new protocols for responding to incidents on arterial streets, according to the city.

The report recommends the city review coordinated response protocols between departments. Other recommendations include finding resources that could help support incident response.
