The driver who allegedly hit and killed students walking on the side of the road in Bellingham was arrested for vehicular homicide and assault.

Two high school students were killed and two others injured after an SUV hit them from behind Wednesday afternoon. The teens were walking with their class as part of a physical education exercise.

The driver was on drugs, according to the Washington State Patrol. Exactly what he was on has not been verified.

The students were on a raised sidewalk along Smith Road when the crash occurred around 1:30 p.m., according to Washington State Patrol Trooper Mark Francis. The students were near Graveline Road.

Two boys, an 18-year-old and 15-year-old, were killed in the collision. The two students who were injured were transported to St. Joseph Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, according to Francis.

Francis says the 34-year-old driver told investigators he fell asleep at the wheel.

The students were Windward High School students, the Bellingham Herald reports. The school is a college-prep high school. Graduation ceremonies were held Tuesday.
