Feared I-5 backups at Olympia never materialize

The monster backups predicted for I-5 in Olympia over the weekend never materialized, and drivers are getting the credit.
The state was worried about 14-mile backups through Olympia during the major construction project that’s underway to replace an expansion joint across the freeway near the interchange with US 101. But drivers either skipped trips, took alternate routes or otherwise avoided the freeway. The backups were minimal all weekend.
The state is hoping drivers do the same thing next weekend when the freeway will once again be squeezed down by several lanes to finish the job.
Closures next weekend begin Thursday night Sept. 18. The roadway should be reopened by Monday at 5 a.m.
