Fire in Seattle’s Fremont neighborhood claims one life

One person is dead from a fire that ripped through a three-story apartment building in Seattle’s Fremont neighborhood.
The man, in his 80s, died from his injuries Friday morning at Harborview Medical Center.
“Another resident of the building told us that he had pulled the guy out when he was on fire and tried to extinguish the flames on his body,” said Seattle Fire Department spokesman Kyle Moore. “That individual ending up getting 2nd and 3rd degrees burns to his hands.”
That second man, in his 40s, remains hospitalized in satisfactory condition, said Moore.
The fire was so intense when firefighters arrived Thursday night that two adjacent buildings were threatened by the flames, although the fire did not spread, according to Moore.
The cause of the fire has not been determined but the building is considered uninhabitable. The Red Cross has helped at least one resident.
Fire Department investigators said the fire started in a common area on the second floor but they have not pinpointed the exact location or cause, said Moore. Estimated damage to the building and its contents is $250,000.
