One person was found dead inside a burning RV after deputies, responding to an unrelated call, heard an explosion near 65th Ave Ct. E and 224th St. E in Spanaway.
The explosion was reported just before 8 a.m. Pierce County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) deputies saw smoke coming from a nearby property and found an RV engulfed in flames. Central Pierce Fire extinguished the fire.
Deputy Carly Cappetto, PCSO Public Information Officer, said the person is believed to be an adult, but has not been identified.
“We unfortunately are not able to identify who the deceased person is,” Cappetto said. “We do believe it’s an adult, but we are not able to make an identification or know the gender.”
Investigators seek cause of deadly RV fire in Spanaway
The property includes a home, several vehicles, and two other RVs. Authorities believe someone was living in the RV, but have not confirmed whether that person is the one who died. A nearby garage, another RV, and some vehicles sustained damage.
Detectives and the Pierce County fire marshal are investigating. Detectives were interviewing people in the area, and officials have not determined what caused the explosion or fire.
“We do not know at this time what caused the explosion, what caused the fire, what led up to this,” Cappetto said. “So, right now we can’t say one way or the other if there’s foul play, if it’s just a tragic accident. So we’re just letting the detectives and the Fire Marshal kind of conduct their investigation before we can make that determination.”
The medical examiner will determine the deceased person’s identity and cause of death. The fire marshal will work to determine what caused the explosion.
