They say there is no such thing as a free ride, and Tacoma’s T Line is about to prove that statement true.

Riders of the T Line will have to pay when the Hilltop Tacoma Link extension opens early next year, but it won’t break the bank.

According to Sound Transit, the fares will be $2 for adults, $1 for seniors and disabled riders, and $1 for those with an Orca Lift card. Of course, those 18 and under ride for free. The $2 fare matches Pierce Transit buses.

Sound Transit spokesperson John Gallagher said, “The plan has been all along to charge fares” once the construction is complete come the first of the year.

He said folks with limited income can attend outreach events to help riders enroll in the discount program. Outreach events will take place as Sound Transit gets closer to an opening date.

The train is formerly known as the Tacoma Line. It is a light rail line in Tacoma that is operated by Sound Transit.

The extension was set to open last May. It is running about $60 million over budget, now costing $282 million, and is set to open in the first half of 2023.

The 2.4-mile extension will go from downtown to the Hilltop neighborhood. There will be six more stations.

The line is currently free and is subsidized by the downtown Tacoma business association.

Tacoma’s T Line trains will be running eight to 14 hours a day and during most hours, with the cars arriving in 12 to 14-minute intervals.
