Kitsap boy who brought gun to school might get probation

Charges have been filed against a 9-year-old Kitsap County boy, accused of bringing a gun to school. But he might get treatment and probation instead of detention.
The .45 caliber gun went off in the boy’s backpack, severely wounding a classmate, who was shot in the arm and belly. At last check, the wounded girl remains hospitalized in critical condition.
Prosecutor Russ Hauge tells the Kitsap Sun “nobody is trying to lock this little boy up.” For now, he’s under house arrest, living with his uncle.
The boy is charged in juvenile court with assault, bringing a gun to school and illegal possession of a firearm but Hauge hopes he can work a deal to get the boy treatment and probation. He’s due in court again March 7.
A separate investigation is underway into how the boy got hold of the gun. Police think the 9-year-old got the weapon during a visit to his mother’s home. That woman is a felon and prohibited from possessing a firearm.
