An early poll gives republican Attorney General Rob McKenna a 9 point lead over Congressman Jay Inslee in their race for Governor.

The Elway poll of registered voters has McKenna leading Inslee 45-to-36 percent. The Republican also does well outside his party.

“McKenna is doing well across the board,” said Stuart Elway, President of Elway Research in Seattle. “He’s obviously leading among Republican voters but he’s leading among independent voters, as well.”

When asked if they have a positive or negative impression of Democrat Inslee, Pollster Stuart Elway says that voters are about evenly split. But McKenna has a ratio of three-to-one positive over negative.

Elway stresses that it’s early in the election cycle.

“These two candidates have been running for almost a year now, but a lot of it has been below the voter’s radar,” said Elway. “Now that we’re in the election year, I’d expect people to start paying more attention and start filling in some of these blanks. We had 3 in 10 people for each candidate who had heard the name, but didn’t have any impression of the candidates one way or another.”

The poll of 405 registered voters last week has a margin of error of plus or minus 5 percent.
