Middle school student stops bus after driver’s heart attack

A middle school student in Fife stepped up to save the day
when his bus driver suffered an apparent heart attack
Friday morning on the drive to school.
The bus was just about to pull up to Surprise Lake
Middle School, on Milton Way, when the driver slumped over
the wheel.
Deputy Fife School Superintendent Jeff Short says
one of the 12 or 13-year-old students took quick action.
“As the bus was angling away, the student went up
and helped pull the driver back and get the wheel,” said
Short. The student was able to pull the bus safely to a
stop on the side of the road.
A school district employee who was driving by saw
something was wrong and pulled over, got on board the bus,
and started CPR on the stricken substitute driver. Medics
transported the man to a hospital, but his condition is
not known.
The students walked the short distance to school
and Short says staffers were meeting with the kids Monday
morning, concerned that they might be upset about what
happened.
