November vote on referendum to reverse gay marriage likely

The effort to put gay marriage to a vote of the
people in Washington has reached a key milestone.
Organizers say they’ve collected more than 127,000
signatures of registered voters, more than the minimum need
to qualify for the ballot.
The Secretary of State recommends 150,000 names to
guarantee enough valid signatures.
The signature gathering campaign seeks a ballot
measure to repeal the same-sex marriage law.
Backers of Referendum 74 say they found some
surprising support in collecting signatures.
Preserve Marriage Washington says the Muslim community,
which typically has not taken a stand on gay marriage, has
actively circulated petitions.
The same-sex marriage law, approved by the
Legislature last session takes effect June 6, unless the
referendum qualifies for the November ballot.
