Plenty of options to recycle your Christmas tree

With the holidays coming to an end, a lot of us will be spending the weekend getting rid of our Christmas trees, and the Boy Scouts will be glad to help.
In what’s become one of the biggest fundraisers for Scouts, troops will be staging their annual tree pick up across Western Washington over the weekend.
“It helps the environment, it’s a service project, and it teaches the boys what work looks like to raise funds as well. It’s kind of a tri-fold mission for us,” says Shane Hazard, a parent coordinator for Troop 49 in Lynnwood.
The troop has passed out about 5,000 flyers around the area, informing people to put out their trees curbside over the weekend.
“People still enjoy the fact they get their tree recycled, it’s environmentally friendly, they’re not burning them, so it’s become a big thing,” Hazard says.
A number of troops are included in a map created by area Boy Scouts to coordinate tree pickups in both neighborhoods and at a number of locations around the area.
If the service isn’t offered in your area, there are plenty of other options to recycle your tree.
Those with curbside yard waste collection can simply put their trees – minus tinsel and flocking – outside with the rest of their waste for pickup.
You can also recycle them at a number of recycling and transfer stations around the area.

Private companies such as Cedar Grove Composting and Pacific Topsoils will also take your tree off your hands for a nominal fee ranging from $3-$5.
