Monday is moving day for people living beneath Seattle’s Alaskan Way viaduct.

As the project to build a tunnel works its way north, the state is sweeping into the area Monday to move homeless people out of the construction zone near Yesler Way for safety reasons. Two homeless people have been killed in state construction zones.

Signs warning of the eviction went up a few days ago. If belongings are left behind, the state will take photographs of the items and store them.

Millions of dollars are budgeted to help commuters and businesses affected by the construction. There’s even money to build a museum. Seattlepi.com reports that homeless advocates are upset that there’s nothing for the homeless.

Estimates of the number of people living under the viaduct vary widely, between ten and 100.

City workers have visited homeless people living under the viaduct to offer them shelter space.
