A mill in Tacoma, Johnson’s Millwork on S. Tacoma Way at the Highway 16 interchange, continues to burn after it erupted in flames Sunday night at 6 p.m.

More than 12 hours later, flames keep popping up after Tacoma firefighters spent the night battling a large blaze. I-5 commuters in Tacoma are still seeing smoke Monday morning along the highway.

Fire crews were forced to take a “defensive operation” after the fire was reportedly “burning heavily” in the basement of the mill, meaning they couldn’t safely get to it. The mill’s roof collapsed sometime overnight.

No other surrounding buildings caught on fire.

One firefighter was injured and taken to the hospital Sunday night, according to the Tacoma Fire Department, suffering a minor injury while battling the fire.

Approximately 12 Tacoma crews responded to the fire. These crews will remain on scene throughout Monday.
