Police taped off an entire neighborhood block in Tacoma Tuesday afternoon after officers discovered potential explosive devices in a home they were searching in relation to a murder suspect.

Residents were asked to avoid the area around South 14th Street and South Proctor Street, near the University of Puget Sound, as the bomb squad investigated. The home is in the 1400 block of South Madison Street.

No explosives were found, but the case surrounding the suspect had investigators worried.

Officers arrested a 28-year-old man Monday evening following a drive-by shooting. The man allegedly was shooting at his brother across the street. After the arrest, police discovered the man’s mother at his home. She was reportedly shot to death.

The suspect’s brother told police he did not hear the gunshots in the home, but he saw his brother going in and out of different rooms with a shotgun. The brother jumped out of a second story window with only his socks on to escape. Later, the man went out to find the brother and shot at him on the street. The brother was not injured.

The man also allegedly attempted to kick down the door of his uncle’s residence.

Police don’t yet have a motive. But family members told detectives the 28-year-old man had declined emotionally after shooting an intruder back in 2012, and spent most of his days in his room playing video games.
