It’s officially winter, and that means people in the Puget Sound region have less than 8.5 hours of daylight to enjoy on Thursday.

The solstice in the Northern Hemisphere was at 8:28 a.m., marking the shortest day of the year.

Daylight hours for Thursday are 7:55 a.m. to 4:20 p.m.

The solstice marks the day when the Earth is tilted on its axis of rotation by 23.5 degrees and the North Pole is farthest from the sun.

According to the National Weather Service:

If you’re keeping score, Earth is passing through the solar system now at 67,762 MPH and our rotational speed in Seattle is 699 mph.
