A woman who was killed while attempting to cross I-90 on foot left questions that may never be answered.

But KIRO Radio learned a little more about the woman who was hit by a car on Wednesday near Sammamish.

“Today, we lost our beloved Katherine Jones to a tragic accident,” an email to KIRO Radio reads. “What I want people to know about Katherine is she was all about helping others. She died trying to help accident victims on the freeway.”

Jones, 53, was an experienced truck driver who knew about road safety, the email states. She was responsible and was just trying to help.

The people Jones was trying to help were involved in a minor three-vehicle collision, according to the Washington State Patrol. By the time Jones reached the scene, troopers were already there to assist.

The vehicles were on the left shoulder of westbound I-90 near West Lake Sammamish Parkway. Jones parked on the right side and was attempting to cross the freeway. She was then hit by a car traveling in the HOV lane.

It begs the question: What are we supposed to do when we witness a crash?

It’s OK to render assistance, KIRO Radio traffic reporter Chris Sullivan explains. However, you’re supposed to do so safely. The standard rule is even if you’re involved in an accident, you should stay in your car until it’s safe.

“This one has a lot of questions we’ll never get answers to,” Sullivan said.
