Sunday’s home game against Tampa Bay marks the beginning of the second half of the Seahawks’ 2019 season.

With eight games under their belts, Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll took some time to reflect on the first half of the season on KIRO Radio’s Pete Carroll Show.

Carroll said that he likes to break the season into halves or quarters with his players to better hone in on certain aspects of training.

“It gives us a clarity … you’ve got to find your focus and help the guys take it in segments so they can deal with it and kind of digest what we’re after and how the challenges present themselves,” he explained.

In the first half of the Seahawks’ 2019 season, Carroll believes the players’ hard work, positive outlook, and overall mentality have helped them to gain success against their opponents.

“We have a chance to have a really good season here, and these guys are in it, they’re working really consistently, and they really care,” he said. “They bring the lunchbox every day now, so we’re getting great consistency out of their input, so that’s really important.”

It is something that he said has come to light this season in particular. At six wins and two losses, 2019 marked the best first half of a season for the Hawks since 2013’s 7-1 first half.

“With the leadership that we have, and the young guys following in and kind of stepping along with it, we have a chance to have a really good team for the next couple of years … Now we’ve got to finish that too,” he said. “Just because it’s what we’ve done so far, it doesn’t mean anything. We’ve got to keep going.”

For Carroll, the biggest area of improvement for the remainder of the Seahawks’ 2019 season is consistency. Consistency, he said, would have helped the Seahawks maintain their fire from the first half of last week’s game against Atlanta into the second half — a game which the Hawks won, but in which nearly all of their points were scored before the third quarter.

“We can be more consistent just all across the board … we’ve got to just find our consistency and just stay on, week after week after week,” Carroll said.

Listen to the Pete Carroll Show on Fridays at 12:30 p.m. during the Dori Monson Show on KIRO Radio, 97.3 FM.
