‘Oreogate’ has parents picking sides over a kindergartner’s lunchbox

Sep 18, 2026, 6:12 PM

A chocolate sandwich cookie has become the center of a viral parenting showdown, real or not, dubbed “Oreogate.”

Here’s the setup.

A series of Instagram posts by @ashleighjamz supposedly shows a group chat between moms whose five-year-olds all attend the same school.

One mom, allegedly called Michelle, said her daughter Ava came home upset because another little girl had Oreos in her lunchbox.

“We don’t allow that kind of thing at home,” Michelle explained.

And then she made the leap that apparently launched a thousand comments.

She asked the other moms if they could agree not to send Oreos because the children might compare lunches and feel like they’re missing out.

And that is when the group chat fireworks began.

“Respectfully, I’m not changing my daughter’s lunch because your daughter wants an Oreo,” another mom, Charlotte, said.

The group chat blew up again when the Oreos showed up the next day in someone’s lunchbox.

Then another mom, Laura, texted.

“That’s literally just life,” she said.

Boom. Pass the popcorn.

Or, apparently, hide the Oreos.

Mom in ‘Oreogate’ allegedly gets school involved

Michelle, the mom who requested no Oreos, allegedly got the school involved.

In the end, the school sent an email encouraging healthy eating but giving parents discretion over what they pack.

But online, the conversation about “Oreogate” is far from over.

Parents had a lot to debate, everything from food restrictions to boundaries.

Even Kylie Kelce shared her take on her podcast “Not Gonna Lie.”

“I fully support the opportunity for parents to feed their kids whatever they feel is going to be the best choice for their kids,” Kelce said. “That is entirely your business, but you can’t bring your thoughts and feelings into somebody else’s lunchbox. That’s not for you. Get your nose out of their lunchbox.”

‘Oreogate’ may be fake

There is some talk online that “Oreogate” may not have been a real mom-group meltdown at all. The posts have not been verified as actual conversations, and the music playing was reportedly generated by AI.

But Oreo did release a statement saying the company has nothing to do with this drama.

But here’s the funny thing: even if the Oreo conversation itself was manufactured, the argument feels very real to parents.
