The public will have to wait to see exactly what happened during an officer-involved shooting at the Bellevue Transit Center back in December.
The suspect, Mohamed Bangura, was shot, and an officer was injured.
Bellevue police chief requests bodycam video be released
Bellevue Police Chief Wendall Shirley requested the officer’s body-worn camera video be released to the public in the interest of transparency.
That request was sent to the King County Force Investigative Team, and after consulting with King County prosecutors, the decision was made to hold the video so as not to compromise the ongoing legal case.
“We don’t want to hand the defense a possible argument that we were interfering with their trial rights. We want this felony case to move forward,” Casey McNerthney, a spokesperson for the King County Prosecutor’s Office, said.
Suspect in Bellevue officer-involved shooting charged with felony assault
The suspect is charged with two counts of felony assault.
Prosecutors said the video can be released after the trial is over.
“The video should absolutely be shown in court. That’s different than showing the video in a way that could get the case dismissed,” McNerthney said.
Suspect allegedly lured officers to transit center, stabbed one
Bangura allegedly lured officers to the transit center with a fake 911 call, according to KING 5, citing court documents.
When officers got there, they spoke with Bangura, who confirmed he made the call.
Bangura then allegedly motioned to his side, pulled out a knife, and lunged at one of the officers. The officer avoided the knife, but Bangura allegedly turned and stabbed the second officer, KING 5 reported.
The first officer then shot Bangura three times. The second officer and Bangura were subsequently taken to the hospital. The officer has since been released.
According to KING 5, Bangura remained in serious condition at the hospital as of December 15.
