Two parents in Lakewood have been charged with murder in connection with the death of their 2‑month‑old son.

Mark Anthony Labaco Clamor, 21, and Alyssa Jade Vanderbeck, 19, were both charged after law enforcement said their infant sustained injuries consistent with abusive head trauma, according to KIRO 7.

According to court documents, the couple called 911 on March 4, saying the baby wasn’t breathing. The child was taken to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital in Tacoma, where he died about five days later.

Investigators detail injuries and parents’ statements

Medical examiners found the infant had significant brain hemorrhaging, extensive retinal hemorrhages, and possible rib fractures — injuries doctors believe were caused by shaking or rough handling rather than a medical condition or accident.

Police noted in court documents that the parents’ reactions at the hospital were unusual, considering the seriousness of the situation.

In interviews with investigators, Clamor acknowledged that he rocked the baby with a violent, jerking motion after the child became fussy, and said he saw the baby’s head “jerk back pretty hard,” according to the documents.

Vanderbeck told investigators she was napping earlier and did not immediately recognize the severity of the infant’s condition, thinking initially that the child might have had gas or a seizure. Documents said it took around an hour before the couple called 911.

Clamor and Vanderbeck appeared in court on Thursday for their arraignment. Bail was set at $1 million each, and a judge ordered that they have no contact with one another while the case proceeds.
