The Seattle Police Department (SPD) is investigating a drive-by shooting that left a 21-year-old man seriously injured Sunday evening in West Seattle’s Delridge neighborhood.

The shooting happened at 6:42 p.m. Sunday near SW Holden Street and 12th Avenue SW.

“Officers arrived and found a man suffering from gunshot wounds to the arm and the leg,” SPD Detective Brian Pritchard told KIRO Newsradio. “Officers provided aid until Seattle Fire Department medics arrived. The victim was transported to Harborview Medical Center in serious but stable condition.”

Victim shot while walking in alley

Pritchard said the victim was walking through an alley with a relative when a light-colored vehicle drove by, and someone inside opened fire.

The man was hit in the arm and the leg. Officers provided aid until Seattle Fire Department (SFD) medics took over. The victim was transported to Harborview Medical Center in serious but stable condition.

“All we have is the information they gave us,” Pritchard said. “They said they did not recognize the car or the suspect.”

No known connection between victim and shooter

At this point in the investigation, detectives said there is no known relationship between the victim and the shooter.

“All we have right now is what we were told by the victim. It’s just a light-colored vehicle pulled up, and it was a drive-by,” Pritchard said. “And shots were fired from inside the vehicle and struck the victim, leaving them injured. As it stands right now, we don’t know of any connection as far as between the victim and the suspect.”

When asked if that means the shooting might have been random, Pritchard said there’s not enough information yet to say.

“Yeah, we don’t have that information right now,” Pritchard stated. “Like I said, the Gun Violence Reduction Unit, they’re going to dig a little bit deeper into this and try to determine the circumstances leading up to this shooting. So, we’re going to let them do what they do and try to find out more information about this.”

Detectives seek tips

The case has been turned over to the Gun Violence Reduction Unit. It is working to determine what led up to the shooting and whether the victim was specifically targeted.

As the investigation continues, detectives are looking for more information about what led to the shooting.

“We always ask if anyone has any information to please contact our Seattle Police Department violent crimes tip line at (206) 233-5000,” Pritchard added.
