For the first time this flu season, a child has died from influenza here in Washington, according to the state health department.

A teenager from Snohomish County got sick and passed away last week, officials said Wednesday.

So far this season, Snohomish County has had 10 deaths and 222 people hospitalized. Statewide, influenza had killed 59 people as of Jan. 17.

“Our hearts go out to the family and friends of this youth,” said Health Officer Dr. James Lewis. “It’s a sad reminder of the danger that influenza and other vaccine-preventable diseases pose to our community.”

Flu season peaks around this time of year

The flu season typically runs from October through April and peaks around this time of year, according to Lewis.

“It’s never too late to get vaccinated for the flu,” Dr. Lewis said. “Even if you still catch it, the vaccine generally reduces the number of sick days you’ll take from work or school and reduces the severity of symptoms, keeping you out of the hospital.”

Snohomish County reported 53 flu‑related deaths last season. That was the most in more than 10 years. A total of 859 flu‑related hospitalizations were reported, officials said.

Young children, older adults, people who are immunocompromised or have chronic health conditions, pregnant individuals, and those residing in long‑term care facilities or nursing homes are at a higher risk for severe disease from influenza.
