Yesterday I was talking with a group of young people and admiring the “bright flame” of the life lived by Kayla Mueller, a young woman who didn’t allow risk to keep her from how she wanted to live. I found her dedication inspiring. However, a closer examination of her work as a humanitarian has me rethinking my admiration on how she lived and what she sacrificed for.
While I still find the loss of this young woman heartbreaking and tragic, after reading this column I found the causes for which she endangered herself to be tragically misguided.
