ASK URSULA

Dear Ursula: Do I have to send a wedding gift if I wasn’t invited to the ceremony?

Jul 23, 2026, 9:14 AM

Dear Ursula,

Recently, I received a wedding announcement in the mail from the daughter of a family friend. While I’m thrilled for the couple and this major milestone, I’m torn about whether I should feel obligated to send them a wedding gift.

To be clear, the announcement I received was that the wedding had already happened, and we were not invited to the big day. While I initially felt inclined to send them a gift, my spouse weighed in that if we were not invited to the event, there’s no need to send one. My spouse believes that the “social contract” states a gift is provided in exchange for the meal/drinks/entertainment that come along with an invite to the wedding.

I’ve met the newlyweds a handful of times and like them both, so I’d like to celebrate them, but I do understand my spouse’s point of view as well. How should we proceed?

Thank you,

Feeling Stingy in Seattle

Dear Feeling Stingy in Seattle,

You are not stingy, and you are not obligated to send a wedding gift.

As you point out, the wedding has already happened. You were not invited, and the announcement was simply letting you know the couple got married. You are being informed, not invoiced.

That said, I do not agree with your spouse’s idea that a wedding gift is exchanged for the meal, drinks, and entertainment at the reception. A wedding is not a restaurant bill split among the guests, and no one should be calculating whether the salmon, champagne, and DJ add up to the value of the crockpot you bought them.

To me, a wedding gift is a gesture of affection and support. It is a way of saying, “I care about you, I am happy for you, and I wish you well as you begin this life together.” The amount you spend should be based on your relationship with the couple and what you can comfortably afford, not on what you imagine they spent hosting you.

In this case, why not send them a thoughtful card congratulating them? That would be perfectly appropriate. You’ve met them only a handful of times, and you were not part of the celebration, so there is no need to force a level of generosity that does not match the relationship.

But if you genuinely like them and want to send a modest gift or some money, do it because it feels joyful to you, not because etiquette has cornered you into it.

The best gifts are given freely. The moment they start feeling like a chore or a tally sheet, everyone has lost the plot.

With love,

Ursula
